The Story

The Challenge

Dementia affects nearly 1 million people in the UK, with carers and healthcare systems struggling to provide effective remote monitoring without intrusive, expensive sensor deployments.

My Contribution

As AI Research Fellow on the NHS-funded Technology Integrated Health Management (TIHM) project — led by Professor Payam Barnaghi — I developed machine learning algorithms that detect early signs of urinary tract infections and monitor daily living patterns in dementia patients — conditions that, if missed, lead to hospitalizations and accelerated cognitive decline.

The Impact

  • System deployed across 200+ homes supporting 650+ people in Surrey, now operating as an NHS remote monitoring service since 2020
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, SABP NHS offered remote services to 1,000+ individuals across Surrey, UK using the TIHM system
  • Won HSJ 2018 Award for Innovation and NHS70 Parliamentary Award
  • Research cited in House of Lords evidence (INQ0017) and an EU policy report
  • Featured in 20+ media outlets including Daily Mail and BBC
  • Ranked in top 5% of all research outputs by Altmetric
  • 5 patent citations from international technology companies
  • Economic evaluation confirmed positive ROI with reduced hospital admissions and social care strain
